Federal Member for Banks, David Coleman MP, met with Damon Zhong of Hurstville Grove this morning at Parliament House to congratulate him on his selection to the Australian team for the International Mathematic Olympiad, which will be held in South Africa in July.

“The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country,” Mr Coleman said.

“Damon made his way on to the Australian team by excelling in the domestic competitions.

“He is a great credit to his family and I know our whole community is right behind him in his endeavours”.

A recent survey revealed that 85 per cent of Olympiad alumni use their science, technology, engineering or mathematics skills in their current jobs. Of those who finished tertiary education, 65 per cent were directly employed as educators, researchers or engineers.

“The Olympiad is a great door-opener for our talented students to get further involved in these fields. I encourage our local schools and students to get involved in the annual competitions,” Mr Coleman said.
