FEDERAL FUNDING FOR UPGRADE OF ST GEORGE SPORTING FACILITIES

David Coleman MP, Federal Member for Banks has today announced that a re-elected Turnbull Coalition Government will upgrade sporting facilities across the St George area. Mr Coleman was joined by the Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party and Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, to announce the $1.75 million commitment in Penshurst. The funding will be directed to four areas: • Penshurst Park / Hurstville Aquatic Centre: $1 million will be provided towards the major upgrade of these facilities. The upgrade will include the first synthetic football field in the St George region, along with additional court space for basketball, netball, badminton and table tennis, and improved facilities for cricket • St George Regional Athletics Centre: $500,000 towards the proposed St George Regional Athletics Centre. This facility will include a synthetic athletics track and improved track and field facilities. Georges River Council is currently consulting the community on proposals to build this facility at Riverwood Park • Olds Park: $150,000 towards upgrades to AFL facilities at Olds Park. Funds will be used to improve irrigation, and to install an electronic scoreboard • Peakhurst Park: $100,000 towards improvements at Peakhurst Park. Funds will be used to improve the Amenities Block, to construct seating, and to improve fencing Mr Coleman said that the St George region’s sporting facilities are below the standard of many other parts of Sydney, and these upgrades will help to address that gap. “In both football and athletics, St George is one of the few regions in Sydney that still does not have a professional quality synthetic surface. I have long argued for these facilities to be built and am pleased that these funds will help to make that happen.” Ms Bishop said that the sporting upgrades were a part of the Turnbull Liberal Team’s commitment to local communities. “David Coleman has been advocating strongly in Canberra for this funding for an extended period of time. The Turnbull Liberal Team is committed to supporting Australian sport, and this funding will deliver substantial improvements to facilities in the Banks electorate.”
