David Coleman, the Federal Member for Banks, has welcomed news that Riverwood Community Centre has received $50,000 in Federal funding to help the local community.
The Riverwood Community Centre is using the funding to run a fitness and wellbeing program focused on helping young people.
The program commenced 1 August 2019 and is being facilitated by professional basketball coaches, a personal trainer, music coaches and creative arts facilitators.
The fitness aspect of the program delivers workshops on nutrition, healthy living and making good choices. The program also includes a number of activities one night per fortnight for 12-17 year olds, providing a safe place for young people.
Mr Coleman has welcomed this funding announcement, noting the positive impact that this program will have.
“This funding allows the staff and volunteers at Riverwood Community Centre to continue their important work for the local community,” Mr Coleman said.
The CEO of Riverwood Community Centre, Ms Michelle Newman, said there has been an increase in the number of young people accessing the centre to attend the program.
“This program provides a range of opportunities for disadvantaged young people in the area who would not otherwise have access to these programs and activities” said Ms Newman.
Riverwood Community Centre has been in operation since 1974, offering support for Aged Care, youth and family programs and childcare at their facility on Belmore Road, Riverwood.
